Public Domain

With the book’s entry into public domain heralding the start of 2021, many creatives have jumped at the chance to show their appreciation for the work in numerous and vastly different ways. On the indie website Itch.io, a game jam named the Gatsby Jam was held throughout the entire month of January to celebrate the occasion. Organized by Jess Geyer and Alex Sprague of Wannabe Games, those who submitted to the jam showcased how creative one can be with a famous piece of American Literature! One such entry, Robert Tyler’s Rhythm Action Gatsby, went on to win Best Digital Game for another game Jam, the Gaming Like It’s 1925 Jam.

Retellings, sequels and prequels of Fitzgerald’s magnum opus have also been created, sometimes with a diverse spin, such as Nghi Vo’s The Chosen and The Beautiful and Jeremy Holt and Felipe Cunha’s Gatsby, a graphic novel series featuring a POC-centric cast.
